Quiet quitting your corporate job is out. It’s soooooo summer 2022.
In 2025, quiet cracking is IN. And 54% of people are experiencing it. Read the full Business Insider article here 🔗.
What is quiet cracking?
It’s the latest new trend to represent how people are coping with (or not coping with…) the state of the job market and workforce. The job market is terrible. The workforce is also terrible for a lot of people, and people are feeling stuck but scared to take action.
Quiet cracking is silently falling apart at work... So these people show up and do their job, but they're just struggling in silence and slowly dying on the inside. These aren’t people who are openly and obviously burnt out or quiet quitting, they’re people you probably don’t even expect.
Suffering in Silence…
Managers and coworkers usually can’t even see the signs because the quiet cracker (yes I made up this noun version of the term) is hiding it to suffer in silence. They don’t want the attention on them or any kind of conflict. Especially if it could result in a worsened situation politically or even lead to being cut! The fear keeps them shackled.
Most employees who are quiet cracking are still performing somewhat well, so it's kind of hard to see the signs. But they might be having more headaches, more fatigue, and overall just loss of hope. They might even start making a few mistakes here and there due to the lack of engagement. We can't even blame people because work conditions are declining and the job market is in the gutter. People have bills to pay, so staying, suffering, and disassociating is the best thing for survival. I mean come on, we’ve all been there, right??
The Cost:
It's not JUST about feelings and well-being. It's actually costing the global economy $438 billion in loss of productivity— the highest since COVID. It’s a really serious issue on a higher level that could impact the economy long term… A lot of people are disassociating and producing less at work but not enough to be seen. They’re still flying under the radar.
Aside from the fact that they’re unhappy and suffering, healthy work boundaries aren’t necessarily a bad thing. We’re all just here to pay our bills and survive at the end of the day.
If you’re quiet cracking now, I see you.
Here are some of my fave jams from Summer 2022 as we say goodbye to quiet quitting and that era:
